DARWIN - Opener Tanzid Hasan etched his name into Bangladesh cricket history with a magnificent maiden Test century as the tourists tightened their grip on the opening Test against Australia, reaching 351-6 at stumps on the second day in Darwin on Friday.
Resuming on 96-1, Bangladesh produced a disciplined batting display to build a commanding 153-run first-innings lead after dismissing Australia for 198 on the opening day. Chasing their maiden Test victory on Australian soil, the visitors remain firmly in control with four wickets still intact.

Playing only his second Test, Tanzid delivered a composed and mature innings of 101 from 188 balls, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia. His knock featured eight boundaries and a towering six before he was caught in the deep while attempting to attack Nathan Lyon.
Tanzid and Mominul Haque added 102 runs for the second wicket, laying a solid platform before Mominul fell agonisingly short of a half-century, dismissed for 49. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then accelerated the scoring with an entertaining 84, while Mushfiqur Rahim chipped in with a valuable 36.

Australia briefly fought back with the second new ball, removing Shanto, Mushfiqur and Litton Das in quick succession. Veteran Steve Smith claimed all three catches at second slip, drawing level with England’s Joe Root for the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test history. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (32 not out) and Hasan Mahmud (13 not out) frustrated the hosts with an unbroken 40-run partnership to extend Bangladesh’s advantage beyond 150. Mehidy also survived a dropped chance by Cameron Green off the final ball of the day.
