DERA ISMAIL KHAN/ ISLAMABAD - At least twelve people including a Customs official were martyred and 35 others injured when a powerful blast targeted the Aman Mela joint checkpost in Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan on Saturday, police and rescue workers said.
According to Regional Police Officer Dera Ismail Khan Ghulam Mubashir Maken, no personnel of the Pakistan Army or police were among those martyred in the blast, while the remaining victims were civilians. He said the deceased included nine men, two women and a child.

The explosion occurred at the Aman Mela joint checkpost near Darazinda on the Dera Ismail Khan-Quetta Road, close to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Balochistan border. The blast caused extensive damage to the checkpost and a nearby house, while intense firing was also reported after the explosion.
According to initial reports, an explosive-laden tractor trolley was rammed into the Aman Mela police check-post, causing a powerful explosion that also demolished a house adjacent to the check-post. The blast occurred in the Mughal Kot-Darazinda area, close to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Balochistan border. Intense firing was also reported after the explosion.

According to details, the terrorists targeted a Rescue 1122 ambulance which was transporting civilian patients, who had been injured in an earlier blast, from Darazinda to Dera Ismail Khan. An operation by the security forces against the Khawarij terrorists is underway.
Meanwhile, the incident has been termed as another tragic failure of the provincial government to maintain peace and ensure public safety.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have strongly condemned the terrorist attack on a police checkpost in Dera Ismail Khan.
In their separate statements, they expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of innocent precious lives in the incident.
They offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, praying for high ranks for the martyrs and patience for their loved ones. President Asif Ali Zardari directed the relevant institutions to provide the best possible medical facilities to the injured and to make relief operations more effective.

He stressed that operations must be made more effective against the terrorists of ‘Fitna Al-Hindustan’ and ‘Fitna Al-Khawarij’ who are involved in these heinous and brutal acts backed by foreign patronage.
In his statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the sacrifices of the nation’s defenders in the war against terrorism would never go in vain.
He reiterated that the government remains fully committed to the complete eradication of terrorism from the country.
Rescue 1122 teams reached the site soon after receiving information and launched a rescue and relief operation. Six ambulances, a fire vehicle and more than 25 rescuers took part in the operation.
The bodies of the victims were recovered from the blast site, while the injured were provided immediate medical aid and shifted to nearby medical facilities in Darazinda and Dera Ismail Khan.
RPO Ghulam Mubashir Maken said the process of providing immediate medical treatment to the injured and shifting them to hospitals was continuing. Of the 35 injured, 25 were referred to DHQ Teaching Hospital, Dera Ismail Khan, for further treatment.
District Emergency Officer Muhammad Arif Khan directed the deployment of four additional ambulances and rescue personnel from Dera Ismail Khan to assist in the evacuation and treatment of the injured.
Several members of a family residing in the house destroyed in the blast were also among the casualties. Gul Maidanah Bibi, wife of Rozi Khan, Maqoo Bibi, wife of Jalal Khan, and Gul Warina Bibi, daughter of Jalal Khan, were reported among the deceased, while Jalal Khan and his brother Najeebullah sustained injuries.
District Police Officer Dera Ziauddin Ahmad and Superintendent of Police Saddar reached the site and supervised the rescue and evacuation operation. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the incident and sought a report from the relevant authorities. He directed the authorities to ensure provision of all possible medical facilities to the injured. Police, rescue and other relevant teams remained engaged in search, rescue and relief operations at the site.
The deceased included Customs Assistant Sub-Inspector Farman Marwat, customs worker Muhammad Bilal, Muhammad Mehran of Wanda Madat, Masto Khan of Darazinda, customs official Usama and Faisal Aziz of Darazinda, according to preliminary information.
